Repainting a cyclorama involves more surface than the visible wall. The cove, curved corners, painted floor, primer, multiple finish coats, preparation, and drying time can all add materially to the amount of paint, labour, and stage time required.
The Cyclorama Paint Calculator estimates the Total Project Cost, Paint Required, and Elapsed Time for a cyc repaint based on the dimensions and coating plan you enter. It also separates material cost from labour cost and calculates the total painted area, primer requirement, drying time, and cost per square foot.
Use the calculator for repaint and maintenance planning on an existing cyclorama. It is not intended to design the dimensions or geometry of a new cyc. Actual paint coverage, labour productivity, surface condition, temperature, humidity, and manufacturer requirements can change the final quantities and timing.
A cyc repaint includes several surfaces. The calculator models the vertical wall, curved floor-to-wall cove, curved corner sections, and any floor area being painted out from the cove.
The wall is calculated directly from length and height:
Wall area = Cyc wall length × Cyc wall height
The cove uses a quarter-circle arc based on its radius:
Cove arc length = (π × Cove radius) ÷ 2
Cove area = Cove arc length × Cyc wall length
Curved corners add additional surface area:
Corner area = Number of corners × ((π × Cove radius²) ÷ 4)
The painted floor is calculated separately:
Floor area = Cyc wall length × Painted floor depth
These surfaces combine into Total Painted Area, which becomes the basis for coating quantities, labour hours, and project cost.
Enter the physical repaint area first, then describe the coating system, material pricing, and labour assumptions.
Use Cyc Wall Length for the total linear run of the cyc wall. Enter Cyc Wall Height from the floor to the top of the painted wall.
Set Cove Radius to the radius of the floor-to-wall curve. The default is six feet. This value affects the calculated cove surface, so use the actual cyc dimension when available.
Enter Number of Corners for curved corner sections included in the repaint. If the cyc contains one curved corner, enter one.
For Painted Floor Depth, enter the distance the painted floor extends outward from the cove. This area can be substantial. On a 60-foot cyc, a 20-foot painted floor adds 1,200 square feet before any coating multipliers are applied.
Enter Finish Coats for the number of cyc paint coats to apply. The default is three coats.
Use Paint Coverage Rate for square feet covered by one gallon per coat. The default is 250 square feet per gallon. Manufacturer guidance and the actual surface can produce different coverage, so adjust the value when you have product-specific information.
Enter Primer Coats separately. The default is one coat. Set it to zero when refreshing a sound existing coating that does not require primer.
Use Primer Coverage Rate for primer coverage per gallon per coat. The default is 300 square feet per gallon.
The calculator rounds required gallons upward to whole gallons:
Paint required = CEILING((Total area × Finish coats) ÷ Paint coverage rate)
Primer required = CEILING((Total area × Primer coats) ÷ Primer coverage rate)
Enter Paint Cost per Gallon and Primer Cost per Gallon using the prices you expect to pay.
For labour, enter Painter Hourly Rate as the loaded rate per painter and Painters on Crew as the number working simultaneously.
Use Coverage Rate per Painter for the average square feet one painter can coat per hour. The default is 180 square feet per hour per coat.
Enter Prep and Sanding Hours for patching, sanding, masking, and similar preparation before the first coat. The default is eight hours.
Finally, enter Drying Time Between Coats. The default is four hours.
The results separate area, materials, labour, and elapsed time so you can see what drives the project.
Paint Required is the rounded number of gallons needed for all finish coats. Primer Required does the same for primer.
Material cost combines both:
Material cost = (Paint gallons × Paint cost per gallon) + (Primer gallons × Primer cost per gallon)
Because gallons are rounded up, the material estimate may include a small amount of unused product. That can be useful for touch-ups, but it also means the estimate will not always match theoretical fractional-gallon consumption.
The calculator applies each coat across the complete painted area, then adds prep time.
Labour hours = ((Total painted area × Total coats) ÷ Coverage rate per painter) + Prep and sanding hours
This is the total labour workload before dividing it across the number of painters.
Labour cost = Labour hours × Painter hourly rate
Drying is calculated between coats rather than after the final coat:
Drying hours = (Total coats – 1) × Drying time between coats
Elapsed time combines crew-adjusted labour time with drying:
Elapsed hours = (Labour hours ÷ Painters on crew) + Drying hours
The calculator expresses that result as working days using 10-hour days.
Total Project Cost combines materials and labour.
Total project cost = Material cost + Labour cost
Cost per square foot = Total project cost ÷ Total painted area
The calculator labels a result under $1.50 per square foot as Economical, $1.50 to $3.00 as Standard, and over $3.00 as Premium Finish.
These badges are planning signals, not market-price guarantees. A higher cost per square foot can reflect additional preparation, more coats, higher labour rates, expensive coatings, or difficult surface conditions.

Consider a 60-foot cyc with a 20-foot wall height, six-foot cove radius, one curved corner, and 20 feet of painted floor.
The vertical wall area is:
60 × 20 = 1,200 square feet
A six-foot radius creates a cove arc of about 9.42 feet, producing approximately 565 square feet of cove area.
One curved corner contributes approximately 28 square feet.
The painted floor adds:
60 × 20 = 1,200 square feet
Total painted area is therefore about 2,993 square feet.
With three finish coats at 250 square feet per gallon:
Paint required = 36 gallons
At $48 per gallon, finish paint costs $1,728.
One primer coat at 300 square feet per gallon requires 10 gallons. At $32 per gallon, primer costs $320.
Total material cost is $2,048.
Using a painter productivity rate of 180 square feet per hour per coat, four total coats, and eight prep hours produces approximately 74.5 labour hours.
At $42 per hour:
74.5 × $42 ≈ $3,129 labour cost
With two painters and four hours drying between coats, drying contributes 12 hours. Total elapsed time becomes approximately 49.3 hours, or 4.9 working days.
Materials and labour combine into a Total Project Cost of about $5,177, or approximately $1.73 per square foot. Materials represent about 39.6 percent of total cost.
That places the example in the calculator’s Standard cost-per-square-foot range.
Use the calculation to compare repaint approaches before taking the stage out of service.
If the existing coating is sound, setting Primer Coats to zero can show the difference between a refresh and a full primed repaint. Changing Finish Coats helps quantify the added paint and labour created by another coat.
Prep time also deserves attention. Reducing necessary sanding or patching simply to shorten the estimate can produce an unrealistic plan and may affect the finished surface. Likewise, manufacturer recoat times should take priority over a shorter assumed drying interval.
For recurring maintenance, track actual gallons, labour hours, and drying conditions from completed repaints. Those records can improve future assumptions and help operations teams plan stage availability around cyc work.
